REVISING AND SUBMITTING TO ANOTHER JOURNAL IF REJECTED

If you receive a rejection letter from a journal, do not become discouraged. Go to the next journal on your list and determine whether that journal’s publication goals match your work. Remember that journals are only able to publish a limited amount of articles, have specific publication goals, and may only publish articles about a limited topic range. Approximately 50% of rejected manuscripts are not well suited to the journal to which they were submitted. Make sure that your work matches well with the next journal to which you submit.

Go through the editor’s and reviewers’ comments to understand why your paper was rejected from the first journal. Make a list of noted concerns and address these as thoroughly as possible in the manuscript’s next revision. Ask a neutral colleague to read your revised manuscript and provide feedback. Obtain the author guidelines from your next selected journal and reformat your manuscript to match the specified style guidelines.

The submission and publication process is lengthy and involves multiple drafts, revisions, and possible rejections. Understanding this process, learning how to refrain from personalizing feedback and rejection, and making the time commitment for writing will help you to hurdle setbacks and rejections and persevere to eventual publication. The more frequently you go through this process, the easier it becomes.
